Mercury first crosses the eventual direct-station degree during the pre-shadow. It turns retrograde on October 24, direct in November, then clears the original retrograde-station degree on November 30. The pre- and post-shadow are forward-motion periods.

This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: Mercury is not retrograde for the entire October-to-November span. Small minute differences between ephemerides or rounding conventions are possible; a time-zone conversion can also move the civil date, especially near midnight.
