Saju Compatibility: What Korean Gunghap Can Tell a Couple
Core Answer
Gunghap (궁합) is a Korean tradition of assessing a couple’s compatibility; saju-based approaches compare the two people’s Four Pillars. A score is an interpretation under a particular method, not a scientifically calibrated chance of staying together. Birth details, calculation choices and the full charts matter more than one zodiac animal.
If a result says you are a bad match
A low score can feel especially unsettling when you care about someone or family members take the reading seriously. Before treating it as a verdict, ask what was compared, which birth details were used and what specific relationship concern the interpretation is supposed to describe.
Korean gunghap is not one universally standardized scoring system. The Academy of Korean Studies describes it as a traditional marriage-related folk practice, including differing methods and social uses. Cultural importance does not establish that a chart can decide whether a couple should marry.
Before comparing two charts
Check both records before interpreting a score.
| Input | What to confirm | If uncertain |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Solar or lunar; leap month if applicable | Do not convert twice. |
| Time and place | Recorded civil time and birthplace | Mark unknown; identify time-sensitive claims. |
| Method | Time correction and comparison rules | Scores across different methods are not comparable. |
| Relationship | A question both people want to discuss | A chart cannot supply consent or determine another person’s intentions. |
A complete Four Pillars comparison is not the same as a birth-year animal match.
What a saju comparison actually starts with
Saju uses year, month, day and hour pillars. Each pillar contains a heavenly stem and earthly branch. A detailed comparison may examine day masters, seasonal context, five-element relationships and interactions between branches; a birth-year animal match uses only a small part of that information.
These ingredients do not all carry the same meaning in every school. Ask the reader to name the actual stems, branches or chart relationships behind a statement. ‘You are incompatible’ without a traceable reason gives you little to discuss or evaluate.
Check both people’s inputs before interpreting
Confirm the civil birth date, whether the recorded date is solar or lunar, any leap-month designation, birth time and birthplace. Dates near midnight, solar-term boundaries or historical time-zone changes deserve particular care. Do not manually convert a lunar date and also select lunar input, which converts it twice.
If a birth time is unknown, say so. An invented noon value may change the hour pillar and can hide uncertainty. Compare only the parts supported by the known information, and ask which conclusions would change across plausible birth times before accepting an hour-sensitive claim.
Why two compatibility scores can disagree
Services can weight the same chart relationships differently, use different time corrections, or include different folk systems. A score of 80 on one site is not necessarily better than 65 on another. Without the same method and scale, the numbers are not directly comparable.
Even a repeatable score is not automatically a validated outcome prediction. A traditional combination does not prove affection, and a clash does not prove inevitable conflict. Look for the explanation’s relevance to observed behavior, including examples that contradict it.
Turn one chart theme into a conversation
Imagine an illustrative couple where one person wants a reply immediately and the other needs time before discussing an argument. A reading might frame this as different rhythms. The practical question is whether they can agree on a pause and a clear time to return to the conversation.
Try: ‘When we disagree, I need to know we will come back to it. Could we take an hour, then talk at eight?’ If that agreement helps, keep it. If the chart story does not describe either person, discard it rather than forcing behavior into the interpretation.
Family concerns and the limits of a tool
When family members object because of gunghap, ask which concrete concern worries them: money, location, caregiving, communication or something else. Discuss that concern with your partner directly. A symbolic label should not override consent, respect, safety or the people’s own wishes.
OpenFate’s Bazi compatibility tool can support a Four Pillars comparison. It should not be presented as a complete implementation of every Korean gunghap tradition, nor as a substitute for talking with your partner. Use the calculated structure to ask better questions, not to outsource the relationship decision.
