Liu Yao Divination Guide
Learn what Liu Yao divination is, how a six-line chart is built, which facts are reproducible, and where interpretation must stop.
Overview
Liu Yao is a Chinese six-line divination method that starts with a recorded cast, constructs an original and possibly changed hexagram, then assigns palace, Najia, Six Relatives, Shi–Ying and time context before interpretation. Its chart rules can be reproduced; symbolic conclusions are conditional and do not prove future events.

Direct answer
Liu Yao is a Chinese six-line divination method that starts with a recorded cast, constructs an original and possibly changed hexagram, then assigns palace, Najia, Six Relatives, Shi–Ying and time context before interpretation. Its chart rules can be reproduced; symbolic conclusions are conditional and do not prove future events.
Definitions and prerequisites
A complete learning record needs one bounded question, six line values ordered from bottom to top, the cast time and timezone, and a declared source or product convention. The received Zhouyi text, later Najia methods and a modern software implementation are related but not identical evidence layers.
Method or reference rule
Work in this order: preserve the cast; identify original, moving and changed lines; locate the Eight Palace and generation; assign stems, branches and relations; calculate month, day and void; choose the question focus; then weigh all relevant evidence before writing a conditional interpretation.
Worked example
Six stored values of 7 create Qian as the original hexagram with no moving lines. The fixed chart can identify Qian Palace, its Metal element, Najia rows and Shi–Ying positions, while the question and date are still needed for a focused reading.
Closest failure case
Opening the Zhouyi at hexagram 1 and reading its imagery is not the same operation as constructing a Liu Yao chart. Likewise, a generated chart without its six values, time policy or question may look complete while remaining impossible to audit.
Sources, interpretation and limits
Use Liu Yao as a documented interpretive framework, not a measurement of hidden thoughts or a guarantee. Medical, legal, financial and safety decisions require direct evidence and qualified help; repeated casts must not be used to shop for a preferred answer.
The scholarly Yijing overview, historical Jing text and OpenFate methodology support separate layers. They do not make every later Liu Yao rule ancient or empirically validated.
Verification checklist
Save the question, cast time, timezone, face convention, six line values, source edition and product version whenever they can change the result.
- Reproduce the six stored line values before interpretation.
- Name the method, edition and product settings used.
- Cite the decisive chart facts instead of one dramatic label.
- Use observable records and qualified advice for high-stakes decisions.
