Overview

The history of Liu Yao is not one datable invention. The received Zhouyi, commentarial philosophy, Jing Fang-associated classifications, Najia and Eight-Palace methods, later case manuals and modern products are distinct layers. A defensible history identifies which source supports each layer instead of projecting the finished modern chart backward.

Direct answer

The history of Liu Yao is not one datable invention. The received Zhouyi, commentarial philosophy, Jing Fang-associated classifications, Najia and Eight-Palace methods, later case manuals and modern products are distinct layers. A defensible history identifies which source supports each layer instead of projecting the finished modern chart backward.

Definitions and prerequisites

Historical work requires exact works, editions, passages and dates. A digitized title page or contents list can establish that a term or chapter exists, but a detailed doctrinal claim needs the actual passage and should distinguish base text from later annotations.

Method or reference rule

Build a source timeline: first place the received hexagram text and scholarly account of the Yijing; then locate Jing tradition evidence; then cite later manuals for named operational rules; finally version the modern calculator whose behavior is being described.

Worked example

For the Eight Palaces, the visible 《增刪卜易》 chapter lists eight named hexagrams for each palace, while the current OpenFate code derives the same membership algorithmically. Those are two auditable witnesses with different kinds of authority.

Closest failure case

Saying “Liu Yao has been unchanged since the Zhou dynasty” collapses texts separated by long periods and cannot be supported by the received Zhouyi alone. A modern table’s internal consistency also cannot date its historical origin.

Sources, interpretation and limits

This history supports provenance and terminology, not supernatural claims. Uncertain authorship, edition changes and disagreements should remain visible; historical longevity is not evidence that predictions are accurate.

The three sources support different layers: received Zhouyi text, scholarly history, and a later Jing tradition. Their dates and authority must not be collapsed into one origin claim.

Verification checklist

Save the question, cast time, timezone, face convention, six line values, source edition and product version whenever they can change the result.

  • Reproduce the six stored line values before interpretation.
  • Name the method, edition and product settings used.
  • Cite the decisive chart facts instead of one dramatic label.
  • Use observable records and qualified advice for high-stakes decisions.

Sources and editorial basis

  1. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Chinese Philosophy of Change (Yijing)
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, sections on the textual layers of the Yijing, trigrams, 64 hexagrams and philosophical interpretation. Page claim scope: 以可定位文獻區分《周易》經傳、京房易學、納甲材料與後世占法。Peer-reviewed background for the layered textual and philosophical history of the Yijing, the trigrams and the 64 hexagrams. It does not document every later Liu Yao rule or predictive accuracy.
  2. Chinese Text Project: Book of Changes
Book of Changes index and the exact numbered hexagram page named by the claim; received Zhouyi text only. Page claim scope: 以可定位文獻區分《周易》經傳、京房易學、納甲材料與後世占法。Digitized access to the received Zhouyi text with hexagram-level navigation. It supports exact classical passages, not the complete later Najia chart system.
  3. Chinese Text Project: 京氏易傳
京氏易傳 work record and visible organization; exact rule claims require a separately named volume, passage and edition. Page claim scope: 以可定位文獻區分《周易》經傳、京房易學、納甲材料與後世占法。Digitized historical work associated with Eight-Palace, Shi–Ying, Najia and kinship vocabulary. Exact doctrinal claims still require a named volume, passage and edition.
