The Liu Yao Eight Palaces group all 64 hexagrams into eight families of eight, each anchored by a pure trigram and a palace Five Element.
Overview
The Eight Palaces are Qian–Metal, Dui–Metal, Li–Fire, Zhen–Wood, Xun–Wood, Kan–Water, Gen–Earth and Kun–Earth. Each family contains a pure hexagram, five successive generations, a Wandering Soul and a Returning Soul member; palace identity supplies the reference element used for Six Relatives.

Definitions and prerequisites
You need the complete original hexagram identity. Palace membership cannot be inferred from one trigram alone, and it is separate from the hexagram’s King Wen sequence number.
Method or reference rule
Start from a doubled pure trigram. Flip lines one through five cumulatively for generations one to five, flip line four back for Wandering Soul, then restore the inner trigram for Returning Soul. Index every resulting hexagram once.
Worked example
Qian Palace begins 乾為天, then 天風姤, 天山遯, 天地否, 風地觀, 山地剝, 火地晉 and 火天大有. The family is Metal even when a member’s visible upper and lower trigram elements differ.
Closest failure case
Calling every hexagram with an upper Qian trigram “Qian Palace” misclassifies many charts. Likewise, treating palace order as King Wen order confuses two independent indexing systems.
Sources, interpretation and limits
Palace membership is a fixed classification under the named system. It does not make all eight members share one fortune, and Wandering or Returning Soul labels do not prove travel, return or a psychological state.
