What Is Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數)?
Learn what Zi Wei Dou Shu calculates, what its twelve-palace chart contains, how a reading works, and which claims the tradition cannot establish.
Overview
Zi Wei Dou Shu (Zǐwēi Dǒushù, 紫微斗數) is a traditional Chinese birth-chart system. It converts a recorded birth date and two-hour birth period—plus declared calendar, location, and school rules—into twelve palaces populated by symbolic stars, transformations, and timing layers. The chart is a rule-based cultural model, not a map of measured celestial positions and not evidence that future events are fixed.

A charting tradition, not a sky photograph
The system starts with birth information and applies inherited placement rules to construct a symbolic chart. The “stars” are named calculation markers; most are not the observed astronomical positions of bodies at birth.
A chart organizes questions through palace roles, resident stars, relational geometry, transformations, and timing. Interpretation begins only after those calculated facts are fixed.
- Keep chart calculation separate from interpretation.
- Call it a traditional symbolic system, not proven fate science.
How to start responsibly
Record the civil birth date, exact local time, birthplace, time zone, daylight-saving status, calendar input type, and whether a lunar date falls in a leap month. Mark the time unknown instead of silently choosing noon.
Choose and disclose a calculation rulebook. Then generate the chart, confirm its twelve palaces and provenance stamp, and read the Life Palace within its San Fang Si Zheng context before adding timing layers.
- Preserve original input and normalized time.
- Use one declared rule set from calculation through explanation.
Worked example and near-miss
Suppose a validated chart marks one palace as the Life Palace, stores its branch and resident stars, and links it to two triad palaces plus the opposite palace. A beginner can verify those four records before discussing any theme.
A near-miss is to see the label “Zi Wei Star” anywhere in the chart and say the person “is a Zi Wei type.” That shortcut ignores which palace contains it, whether the Life Palace is empty, its companions, transformations, and relational context.
- Trace every statement to a palace or star record.
- Do not reduce a whole chart to one attractive label.
Stable core and school-specific rules
The twelve-palace architecture and the fourteen-major-star system form a widely shared core. Leap-month handling, year boundaries, Life Master rules, brightness tables, Four-Transformation tables, and some auxiliary stars vary by lineage or software.
OpenFate declares a versioned product policy, Spring Festival year boundaries, true-solar-time hour correction, and a split-half leap-month rule. These are auditable product choices; the internal label is not independent proof of lineage.
- Name the school where a table differs.
- Version the rulebook so a recalculation can be reproduced.
What a Zi Wei Dou Shu page must not claim
The tradition can provide structured prompts for reflection, but it cannot verify personality, health, wealth, marriage, morality, or a future event from birth data alone. Agreement between two calculators or two readers is not independent scientific confirmation.
Use direct medical, legal, financial, safety, employment, and relationship evidence for high-stakes decisions. A responsible reading states uncertainty, conditions, alternative explanations, and practical choices.
- Never promise an outcome or diagnose a condition.
- Keep agency and real-world evidence in the foreground.
Complete topic index
Every workbook topic assigned to this canonical page appears at a stable anchor. Each entry records scope, inputs, flags, and alias ownership as an auditable reference—not a standalone interpretation. Duplicate backlog rows resolve to the same anchor instead of creating duplicate URLs.
- Conditions and inputs
- Missing-input rule: if a listed input or verified chart value is unavailable, stop at the definition; do not infer, calculate, or predict the missing value.
- Calculation flag: no. This atom does not assert a computed result; use the page definition and verified chart data only.
- School-variant flag: no. The workbook does not mark this atom as variant-specific; do not assume universal agreement beyond the cited page sources.
- Category and guidance boundary
- Use this record through the page definition, conditions, worked example, near miss, variants, and limits.
- Source inheritance
- Complete topic index does not assert an atom-specific citation. It inherits this canonical page’s bibliography and locator notes as page-level context only; verify the relevant cited passage before relying on a claim.
