Life Palace (命宮): How to Find and Read It

Overview
The Life Palace (Mìng Gōng, 命宮) is the primary reference palace of the natal chart. In the common placement rule, count birth months forward from 寅 and birth-hour branches backward to locate it; the other eleven role names are then assigned in sequence. Read the Life Palace with its resident or borrowed stars, Body Palace, San Fang Si Zheng, transformations, and timing—not in isolation.

What the Life Palace anchors
The Life Palace supplies the starting role for the twelve-palace sequence and a primary traditional frame for how the person approaches life. It is a structural anchor before it is an interpretation.
The Body Palace is a different calculated marker and may share a palace role. “Life Master” is also a separate derived star label; neither should be conflated with the Life Palace.

How to locate it
Under the documented common rule, begin at 寅 for the first lunar month, count forward to the birth month, then count birth-hour branches backward to the Life Palace. Software should expose the resolved lunar month and hour branch.
In a finished chart, use the single isLifePalace flag, then retrieve its branch, stem, resident star arrays, transformations, and four relational indices. Do not infer it from an arrow image alone.

Worked example and near-miss
For a first-lunar-month Rat-hour example, the stated rule remains at 寅 for both Life and Body. From that anchor, the next eleven palace roles are assigned in sequence; this illustrates the rule, not a personal reading.
A near-miss is to use the Gregorian month number directly or treat 23:30 as Rat hour without applying the product’s day and true-solar-time policy. Either can move the anchor.

Calculation and naming variants
Leap-month treatment and effective hour can differ across rulebooks. Some displays call 命宮 the Destiny, Self, or Natal Palace; these are translation choices around one structural role.

The Life Palace is not the whole person
