What Is the Yang Blade or Blade Pattern (羊刃格) in BaZi?
Learn how Yang Blade Pattern differs from the Yang Blade marker, why the month branch and Day Master strength matter, and how control, flow and damage are judged.
Overview
The Yang Blade Pattern is a month-centered strength structure built around the Day Master reaching a blade position; it is not established by finding a Yang Blade marker anywhere in the chart. The adopted stem-to-branch table, month placement, Day Master strength, Seven Killings control, Output or Wealth flow, and combinations or clashes must be stated. It does not prove violence, injury, crime, courage, leadership, occupation, illness, relationship harm, or shortened life.

A Yang Blade marker is not automatically a Yang Blade Pattern
Yang Blade is keyed to the Day Stem and a branch position associated with concentrated strength. Schools differ on whether yin stems receive a blade and on naming details. OpenFate’s deterministic marker table uses the common five-yang-stem rule: 甲–卯, 丙 and 戊–午, 庚–酉, 壬–子.
Pattern formation is narrower than marker detection. The relevant blade position must organize the month branch or meet the declared school’s month-blade rule, and the analysis must show roots, seasonal force, and competing month qi. A blade found only in another pillar remains a marker, not proof of 羊刃格.
- State the adopted Yang Blade table and school convention.
- Require a month-centered formation route for the pattern.
Concentrated strength must be directed, controlled, or released
Classical blade discussions examine whether the Day Master is already strong and whether Seven Killings can provide effective control. Output may release excess force and Wealth may receive Output, but these paths require actual placement and capacity rather than a slogan such as “Blade likes Killings.”
A combination may bind the blade relation, while clash, punishment, damaged roots, or unsupported control can change the structure. More force is not automatically better, and control that is too weak, too strong, or unable to reach the blade does not complete the path.

OpenFate keeps marker detection and pattern output separate
OpenFate currently detects the Yang Blade marker through the locked five-yang-stem table and reports its pillar placement. This deterministic hit answers “is the adopted blade branch present?” but not “has a complete Yang Blade Pattern formed?”
The current classical-pattern engine names a month-command Rob Wealth structure 月刃格 rather than automatically converting it to 羊刃格. The Wiki therefore documents the broader classical pattern while keeping the implemented marker and engine label explicit. No hidden equivalence should be introduced without a reviewed engine change.

Yang Blade does not establish violence, injury, or character
The pattern does not prove aggression, courage, weapons ability, military or police aptitude, surgery, sport talent, accidents, bloodshed, crime, abuse, impulsivity, leadership, divorce, disability, disease, or early death. Historical blade imagery is not a modern risk assessment.
Safety, medical, legal, hiring, and relationship decisions require observed behavior, current records, consent, and qualified professionals. Never frighten, profile, exclude, or excuse harm because of a blade symbol.
