What Is the Indirect Resource or Mystic Pattern (偏印格) in BaZi?

Overview

The Indirect Resource Pattern centers Indirect Resource selected from the month command and examines exposure, roots, Day Master support, control, and competing Output. Indirect Resource becomes an “Owl robbing Food” problem only when it effectively restrains a relevant Eating God; Wealth may control Indirect Resource and preserve the Food path. It does not prove intuition, isolation, mental illness, unusual talent, family problems, health events, or spirituality.

Indirect Resource presence, pattern formation, and Owl behavior are separate

Indirect Resource is the same-polarity element that generates the Day Master. Pattern formation requires a month-command foundation, exposure or roots, and a coherent relation with the rest of the chart. An Indirect Resource star outside that route remains relevant without automatically owning the pattern.

The name “Owl” describes a particular adverse relation, not every Indirect Resource. Only when Indirect Resource effectively controls a relevant Eating God can an Owl-robs-Food claim be evaluated. The primary Resource pattern and the secondary Food damage must be recorded separately.

  • Prove the month-command route before naming the pattern.
  • Do not equate every Indirect Resource with Owl-robs-Food.

Wealth control and Eating God damage depend on placement and effectiveness

Classical discussions distinguish Indirect Resource itself from the 倒食 condition in which it suppresses Eating God. A Wealth star may control Indirect Resource and protect Eating God, but only when the relevant stems or roots are present and the Wealth is able to act.

Combinations, clashes, damage, strength, and intervening relations can prevent either control from completing. Adding a Wealth label somewhere in the chart is not enough; the analysis must show whether Wealth reaches Indirect Resource without creating a larger unresolved problem.

  • Locate the Indirect Resource, Eating God, and Wealth signals.
  • Test the sequence and strength of control rather than counting names.

OpenFate states its stricter V1 control requirement

OpenFate begins with the effective month command and returns the Indirect Resource candidate, exposure, supporting and blocking signals, formation path, clarity, and confidence. The current V1 policy treats visible Wealth control as the required support path for a formed Indirect Resource Pattern.

Separately, when reviewing an Eating God Pattern, the engine checks whether Indirect Resource restrains Eating God and whether Wealth protects Food or another declared abandonment route resolves the conflict. Keeping these two assessments separate prevents the “Owl” label from swallowing the whole chart.

  • Label Wealth control as an OpenFate V1 implementation rule.
  • Keep Resource formation and Food protection as distinct outputs.

Indirect Resource is not a mental-health, personality, or family diagnosis

The pattern does not prove intuition, genius, eccentricity, secrecy, loneliness, distrust, neurodivergence, mental illness, disordered eating, infertility, a difficult mother, interrupted schooling, unconventional work, religious gifts, or poor health. Historical “Owl” language should not stigmatize a reader.

Medical, psychological, nutritional, education, employment, and family decisions require direct assessment, consent, and qualified care. Never use Indirect Resource to diagnose, shame, predict harm, or deny support.

  • Use non-stigmatizing language and real professional evidence.
