Why Zi Wei Dou Shu Calculators Differ
Compare inputs, time boundaries, leap months, school rules, transformation tables, and software versions to explain chart differences.
Overview
Two Zi Wei Dou Shu calculators can disagree without either screenshot exposing why. Differences commonly come from time zone or daylight-saving conversion, true solar time, the 23:00 day boundary, lunar leap-month handling, year boundary, school placement algorithm, Life Master rule, Four-Transformation table, auxiliary-star policy, or engine version. Compare provenance and structured outputs in a fixed order.

The main classes of mismatch
Input mismatches include calendar type, leap-month status, birthplace, historical time zone, daylight saving, longitude, and whether true solar time changes the hour branch. Boundary mismatches include late Rat hour and year turnover.
Rule mismatches include Life and Body placement policies, Five-Phase Bureau derivation, school algorithm, Life Master, star brightness, Four Transformations, auxiliary stars, and timing direction.

A reliable comparison order
Compare raw input, then normalized civil/effective times, lunar fields, hour branch, Life and Body Palace indices, bureau, Zi Wei location, all fourteen major-star residences, transformations, and timing layers.
Finally compare provenance: school, table citations, engine version, calculation revision, and override policies. Stop at the first divergence because later differences may be downstream consequences.

Worked example and near-miss
Calculator A and B agree on all palaces and major stars but disagree on 戊 Hua Ke: A targets 右弼 while B targets 太陽. That isolates a school-table difference rather than a birth-time or palace-placement error.
A near-miss is to declare A wrong because its center panel or palace orientation differs. Normalize layout first; typography, rotation, and alias choices can leave the underlying chart identical.

What OpenFate publishes for audit
OpenFate’s rulebook identifies its calculation revision, engine version, configured placement policy, Spring Festival boundaries, Life Master rule, Four-Transformation source, true-solar-time behavior, and leap-month split.
A cached chart should retain that stamp with normalized time and location provenance. Recalculation under a later revision should be shown as a new result rather than silently overwriting historical output.

Agreement does not prove interpretation accuracy
When two calculators share a library or rule table, matching charts are expected and are not independent validation. When they differ, identifying the rule explains computation, not which tradition is metaphysically “true.”
Choose a documented policy for consistency, preserve alternatives when birth data is uncertain, and never use calculator agreement as proof of a medical, financial, legal, or relationship prediction.
