How to Read Hidden Stems in Earthly Branches (地支藏干)

Read each branch’s hidden stems as potential roots and internal functions, distinguish primary from secondary qi, and avoid treating stored symbols as visible events.

Overview

Hidden stems are the Heavenly Stems conventionally assigned inside each Earthly Branch. They supply possible roots, Five-Element phases, and Ten-God relations beneath the visible branch layer. A correct reading names the branch and each stored stem, preserves the chosen table, checks month command and interactions, and never assumes that every hidden function is equally strong or publicly expressed.

Lock one documented hidden-stem table

The standard OpenFate table records the exact stem list and ordering for each branch so calculations can be reproduced.

Where historical schools use different labels or proportions, the product should name the adopted convention rather than blending tables silently.

  • Version the selected table.
  • Preserve exact branch-to-stem provenance.

Use hidden stems to test roots and relations

A visible stem can root in a matching stored stem, while each hidden stem also receives a Ten-God relation relative to the Day Stem.

Root quality varies by month, branch position, primary or secondary status, and whether clashes or combinations alter access.

  • Name the visible and hidden participants.
  • Grade root evidence instead of using yes or no only.

Separate storage, revelation, and effective action

A stored stem may remain unexposed, appear in a natal stem, or arrive through a luck or annual pillar; those are different states.

Visibility does not automatically create strength, and storage does not prove secrecy, repression, or a future disclosure.

  • Track natal and timing exposure separately.
  • Keep visibility distinct from capacity.

Do not invent private facts from hidden symbols

Hidden stems cannot establish hidden relationships, undisclosed money, illness, motives, trauma, or deception.

They are model components, not evidence about another person; sensitive claims require consent and direct verification.

  • No secret-event prediction.
  • Protect privacy and avoid accusation.
