A reproducible Vedic birth chart needs more than a date. Keep the recorded local time, birthplace and uncertainty together with the settings used to turn them into positions. This guide explains what to check before trusting differences between two charts. It is a calculation checklist, not a calculator or personalized reading.

Collect the birth record without adding precision
Write the date as recorded, whether the clock used a 12-hour or 24-hour format, and the birthplace. Mark approximate or missing information explicitly. If the record says “around six,” do not silently turn it into an exact 06:00.
Birthplace is the location of the birth, not the place where you live now. For historical dates, confirm the calendar and applicable local clock rules. A correctly entered modern UTC offset does not necessarily reproduce an older local time.
Name the settings that can change the output
Record the zodiac, ayanamsa, house convention and lunar-node mode. Keep the ephemeris or software version when available. “Default” is not a portable setting: another app or release may use a different default.
OpenFate’s declared Vedic framework distinguishes its Lahiri sidereal chart from its Western astrology chart. Check the settings actually shown by the tool or saved report before treating two results as equivalent. A named framework is a reproducibility choice, not a claim that other schools are invalid.
- Check D1 versus D9 or another divisional chart.
- Check natal versus transit or timing views.
- Compare the same body or point on both sides.
A practical mismatch checklist
If many longitudes differ by a similar offset, investigate the zodiac and ayanamsa first. If longitudes match but houses differ, inspect the house method and ascendant. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular error.
Change one setting at a time and record what changed. If you change the time, location and ayanamsa together, you lose the ability to tell which choice caused the mismatch. Keep the original record intact.
An example verification note
A useful note could say: “Two D1 reports use the same birth date and local time; one names Lahiri, the other does not list its ayanamsa. Moon longitudes differ. The comparison remains unresolved until that setting is known.” This is an example of documentation, not a computed chart.
The note is more informative than “app A is wrong” because it identifies the missing variable. Once the settings match, compare numerical positions at an agreed precision before reading the symbolic text.
What if information is missing?
For an uncertain time, compare a plausible interval and identify which outputs change. A single noon chart can be a placeholder for an exercise, but it cannot establish a birth ascendant. Do not quietly fill a missing birthplace with a current address.
IANA documents limitations in historical civil-time coverage, especially before 1970. Swiss Ephemeris documents time and coordinate calculations. Neither source turns an uncertain birth record into an exact one or verifies an astrological interpretation.
