Ayanamsa: Meaning, Calculation and Chart Differences
Understand ayanamsa with a worked longitude example. Learn why sidereal charts differ, what Lahiri specifies, and why the offset is not a fixed number.

Ayanamsa is the angular offset used to relate tropical and sidereal zodiac longitudes under a chosen convention and date. It is a calculation setting, not an extra planet or a personal quality. Two charts can both say “sidereal” yet show different degrees because their ayanamsas differ.

What does ayanamsa mean on a chart?
A zodiac longitude is measured from an origin. Tropical and sidereal conventions do not use the same origin, so the same illustrative celestial position can receive different numbers. Ayanamsa names the angular relationship used for that conversion.
It is not the difference between your Sun sign and Moon sign, and it is not an adjustment in clock hours. The date matters: do not use today’s displayed offset as an exact value for every historical birth.
How the subtraction works: an example
For a simple teaching calculation, let the tropical longitude be 100° and assume an offset of exactly 24°. The corresponding sidereal longitude is 76°. On a grid of twelve 30° signs, that is Gemini 16° instead of Cancer 10°.
If the tropical longitude is 10°, subtraction gives −14°. Wrap once around the 360° circle to get 346°, or Pisces 16°. These examples use invented, rounded inputs, not a calculated Lahiri value for a real date.

How does Lahiri differ from other ayanamsas?
Lahiri is a named sidereal convention. Swiss Ephemeris exposes several other modes and explicitly distinguishes Lahiri-related variants. Therefore “sidereal” alone is insufficient to identify the calculation, and even a familiar label should be checked against the software’s documented mode.
Choose the method required by the source or chart you are studying. Do not switch to a different method simply because it produces a preferred placement, then call that preference a validation test.
Why a small difference can change a sign
Consider an invented tropical longitude of 54.2°. With an assumed offset of 24.0°, the result is 30.2°, just inside Taurus. With an assumed offset of 24.5°, it is 29.7°, still in Aries. The offsets are teaching inputs, not values assigned here to named schools.
This demonstrates a boundary effect: a modest degree difference can change a category label near 30°. Away from a boundary, degrees may differ while the sign stays the same. Check exact positions before announcing that two charts completely disagree.
What to record when comparing two apps
Save the same date, time, location, zodiac, ayanamsa name, numerical offset where shown, and chart layer. Compare a position table rather than a stylized wheel or diamond diagram. Keep house and lunar-node settings as separate fields.
The relevant numerical reference is Swiss Ephemeris §12. Rao’s introductory zodiac discussion supplies a practitioner context, not a test of prediction accuracy. If an app does not disclose its convention, leave the comparison unresolved instead of inventing a setting.
