Overview

Mangala is Mars, a physical planet that Jyotish traditionally associates with strength and action. Its chart role depends on placement and house rulership, not on a single “aggressive” label. Mars is especially recognizable by its fourth, seventh and eighth full aspects in the Parashari-style graha-drishti convention used here.

What does Mars represent?

Mars is associated with strength in Rao’s planetary scheme. As an interpretive prompt, consider how effort is initiated, defended and directed. Purposeful action and conflict are not the same thing; the planet’s name does not show that someone is violent or dangerous.

For house interpretation, distinguish occupied and ruled houses. In an Aries-ascendant whole-sign chart, Mars rules the first and eighth houses because it rules Aries and Scorpio. A different ascendant changes those house roles even when Mars stays in the same sign.

Why is Mars exalted in Capricorn?

Exaltation in Capricorn is a rule of the named dignity system, not an astronomical claim that Mars is physically stronger there. Rao’s table lists 28° Capricorn as the peak and 28° Cancer as the opposing debilitation point. Aries and Scorpio remain its own signs.

A symbolic explanation may contrast directed effort with containment, but that story is not the calculation that establishes dignity. Record the sign and exact degree first. Do not infer a successful career, sporting ability or a particular temperament from exaltation alone.

Count Mars’s special aspects

Place Mars in Capricorn in a synthetic whole-sign chart. Counting Capricorn as one, its fourth aspect reaches Aries, its seventh reaches Cancer and its eighth reaches Leo. Counting four empty signs after Capricorn would produce an off-by-one error.

If the ascendant is Aries, Mars is in the tenth house and these destinations are the first, fourth and fifth houses. The aspect destinations come from Mars; the house numbers come from the ascendant. This is why a list of “Mars aspects” should state both references.

Is every difficult Mars placement Manglik?

No. Manglik or Kuja-dosha judgments use additional conditions, reference points and exceptions that differ by school. A Mars dignity label or one aspect is not enough to establish even that traditional classification. This introduction does not replace a separately sourced comparison of those rules.

It also cannot establish incompatibility, abuse or a future separation. Assess relationships through consent, behavior and practical compatibility.
