Overview

Surya is the Sun in Vedic astrology. It is traditionally associated with selfhood and authority, but its meaning in a kundli depends on its sign, house, rulership and relationships with other grahas. Your Vedic Sun sign is the sign containing the Sun’s calculated sidereal longitude; it is not your Moon sign or ascendant.

What does Surya mean in a birth chart?

In Rao’s account, the Sun is associated with the soul and a royal role. An accessible reading asks about visibility, self-direction and the use of authority. That is a traditional interpretive lens, not proof of leadership ability, a person’s worth or the behavior of a parent.

A sign supplies one condition; a house identifies a field of interpretation; rulership connects another part of the chart. A Sun in the tenth house and a Sun ruling the tenth house are different statements. Neither statement alone shows that someone will become famous or hold a government job.

Sun sign, Moon sign and ascendant: what differs?

The Sun sign comes from the Sun’s longitude. The Moon sign comes from the Moon’s longitude. The ascendant is the eastern horizon’s intersection with the zodiac at the time and place. They can fall in three different signs. In a synthetic example, a Virgo Sun, Taurus Moon and Gemini ascendant do not contradict one another.

Many familiar Western Sun-sign dates use a tropical zodiac. A Vedic chart often uses a named sidereal zodiac such as Lahiri. Do not apply a fixed calendar-date shortcut to every year: check the timestamp, longitude and ayanamsa, especially near a sign boundary. The ayanamsa guide explains how to compare the same Sun between calculators.

Is the Sun strong in Leo or Aries?

Under Rao’s planetary dignity table, Leo is the Sun’s own sign, Aries its exaltation sign and Libra its debilitation sign. The table gives 10° Aries and 10° Libra as the corresponding peak points. “In the exaltation sign” and “at the exact exaltation degree” are not interchangeable descriptions.

Dignity is one rule, not a complete strength calculation. House position, associations and the chosen assessment system add separate considerations. A debilitated Sun is not evidence of poor character, and an exalted Sun does not guarantee status. Keep the rule’s label separate from a life conclusion.

Which houses does the Sun aspect?

In the full graha-drishti rule used here, the Sun aspects the seventh place from itself. Count inclusively: Leo is one, Virgo two, Libra three, Scorpio four, Sagittarius five, Capricorn six and Aquarius seven. This is not the instruction “the Sun always aspects the chart’s seventh house.”

For a synthetic Aries-ascendant whole-sign chart with the Sun in Leo, the Sun occupies the fifth house and aspects Aquarius, the eleventh house. Leo is also its own sign. These are three checkable labels; deciding what they mean for education, creativity or groups requires the rest of the chart and a stated interpretive method.

Can the Sun be combust? Do remedies prove strength?

Combustion concerns another planet’s proximity to the Sun under a named astrological rule. It does not mean that the Sun itself has been burned by another graha. Rao discusses Mercury’s proximity in the Budha-Aditya yoga passage; a conjunction label alone does not supply the angular separation or an accepted threshold. Compare degrees and the source’s planet-specific rule before using the term.

This article does not prescribe gems, rituals or health treatments. Such practices may have cultural meaning, but the chart does not establish their effectiveness. For a useful next step, record the Sun’s degree, house, ruled house and aspect destination; investigate any disagreement in those fields before paying for a remedy.
