The Seventh Aspect in Vedic Astrology
Count the seventh aspect inclusively and distinguish the opposite sign from an exact 180° angle or the natal seventh house. Includes a 170° counterexample.
Overview
The full seventh aspect targets the seventh sign counted from a planet’s occupied sign, with the source sign counted as one. In the seven-planet convention, this is the sign opposite the source. It is not automatically an exact 180° separation between two planets or an aspect to the natal seventh house.
At a glance
- Count starts at
- The source sign as one
- Target
- Six sign steps ahead; the seventh inclusively
- Degree distinction
- Opposite signs do not guarantee exactly 180°
- House distinction
- Relative seventh is not always natal seventh
Why seventh means six steps, not seven
From Taurus, count Taurus one, Gemini two, Cancer three, Leo four, Virgo five, Libra six and Scorpio seven. Advancing seven full sign steps would wrongly reach Sagittarius. The inclusive convention is part of the rule, not a minor display choice.
The same procedure applies to the seven classical planets’ full seventh aspect. Node variants are outside this reference. First find the opposite sign, then inspect actual occupants and the chart’s house reference.
An opposite-sign pair only 170° apart
Use synthetic Sun at Taurus 12° and Moon at Scorpio 2°. Their total longitudes are 42° and 212°, a separation of 170°. They occupy each other’s seventh target signs under the full-aspect convention, but are not exactly 180° apart.
If the chart has Leo lagna and whole-sign houses, Taurus is tenth and Scorpio fourth. The Sun’s seventh aspect therefore targets the natal fourth house here, not the natal seventh. A degree-based opposition assessment needs its own stated tolerance.
Does a seventh aspect always describe marriage?
The word seventh in this rule is counted from the source planet. It does not assign every target to partnership. Identify the actual natal house and question before interpreting it; do not replace the house calculation with a relationship stereotype.
Even a mutual opposite-sign relationship does not establish agreement or conflict between people. Use the graha drishti guide for the wider aspect table and the conjunction guide when close degrees are the issue. Keep structural labels separate from outcome claims.
