What Is a Varga? Divisional Chart Calculation

Understand what varga means, how a sign segment maps to a derived sign, and why multiplying longitude is not a universal calculation method.

Overview

A varga is a division-based representation of a natal chart. The label Dn tells you that each 30° natal sign is split into n parts; a further rule assigns each part to a derived sign. The split alone does not fully specify the chart.

A division needs more than its number

For a position d degrees into its natal sign, the one-based part is floor(d ÷ (30/n)) + 1. Work with the unrounded longitude, using intervals that include their lower edge and exclude their upper edge. At 30° the position belongs to the next natal sign.

Now apply that division’s starting rule. D9 uses an elemental start; D10 uses natal-sign parity and an inclusive ninth-sign count. Multiplication alone may reproduce some mappings but cannot replace the full rule for every chart called a varga.

Why D9 and D10 can disagree

Use Gemini 11° as a teaching input. In D9, 11° lies in part four; air signs start at Libra, so four inclusive signs give Capricorn. In D10 it also lies in part four, but odd Gemini starts from itself and gives Virgo.

The part numbers happen to match while the results differ. Record Gemini 11°, D9/part four/Libra start and D10/part four/Gemini start. This small audit trail explains the disagreement without treating either chart as a changed physical longitude.

Compare algorithms before meanings

Two applications can label a chart D2 while choosing different Hora methods. Ask which rule is used before deciding that different signs are an error. A square or diamond drawing style, by contrast, need not change any calculated placement.
