Fate Stars in Bazi (神煞)
Learn how Shen Sha markers are calculated, why lookup anchors differ, how they can refine a reading, and why they remain secondary evidence.
Overview
Fate Stars or Shen Sha are rule-based markers derived from specified stems, branches, pillars, months, or sexagenary-cycle positions. Each marker has its own lookup anchor and target. They can add a bounded symbolic observation after the main chart structure is understood, but they should not overrule season, strength, Ten Gods, patterns, or direct real-world evidence.

Every marker needs an anchor and target
A valid Shen Sha claim names the source pillar or symbol, the lookup table, and the chart position that matches the rule.
Using the wrong anchor or combining tables from different schools can produce false markers. Store the rule version with the result.

- Do not infer a marker from its name.
Read core structure before auxiliary markers
Month command, Day Master strength, Ten Gods, roots, patterns, and stem-branch interactions provide the primary structural evidence.
A Fate Star can refine placement or repetition after that map is stable. It cannot reverse the chart merely because its name is auspicious or severe.
- Keep Shen Sha secondary.
- Resolve conflicts with stronger evidence explicitly.
Repetition and timing change visibility, not certainty
A marker repeated in several pillars or supplied by a Luck Pillar may deserve attention for that period.
Repetition does not make the symbol literal. State where it appears, when it is active, and which core structure it actually contacts.
- Count exact matches only.
- Attach dates to timing markers.
Severe and auspicious names require restraint
Noble, Peach Blossom, Robbery, Disaster, Illness, or Mourning labels cannot prove status, affairs, crime, accident, diagnosis, or death.
Translate them as historical symbolic categories and keep medical, legal, safety, and relationship claims outside unsupported inference.
