Luck Cycles and Annual Influences in Bazi (大運流年)
Learn how ten-year Luck Pillars and annual pillars interact with the natal chart, what they can activate, and why timing does not guarantee events.
Overview
Luck Pillars, 大運, provide sequential multi-year stem-branch contexts, while annual influences, 流年, add one year-specific pair. Both are calculated timing layers that interact with the original chart through phase force, Ten Gods, roots, combinations, clashes, and pattern conditions. They can indicate periods of structural emphasis, not certain events or universal good and bad years.

Calculate the sequence before interpreting periods
Luck Pillar direction and starting age depend on declared rules, birth data, and solar-term intervals. Annual pillars follow the sexagenary year convention used by the chart.
Store the exact transition time rather than rounding an entire birthday or calendar year when the engine supports finer precision.
- Publish direction and start-time rules.
- Keep period boundaries machine-readable.
Overlay time without rewriting the natal chart
A timing pillar can add a phase, root, Ten God, or missing relation participant. It may strengthen, pressure, combine, or clash with natal evidence.
The added symbol remains time-bound. Natal and timed sources should be visible separately so temporary completion is not mistaken for birth structure.
- Label every symbol by chart layer.
- Expire temporary relations at period end.
Read broad background before narrow activation
Begin with the natal baseline, then the current Luck Pillar, then the annual layer. Monthly or daily detail should not be used to bypass unresolved higher-level structure.
A favorable function must be both needed and operational; an unfavorable contact may be absorbed, redirected, or irrelevant to the question.
- Move from broad to narrow periods.
- Evaluate both support and counterevidence.
Do not publish deterministic event dates
Luck cycles cannot prove marriage, wealth, job loss, illness, accident, litigation, or death in a given year.
Use conditional language, show the active structural theme, and base decisions on real circumstances rather than astrological timing alone.
- No guaranteed good or bad year.
- No high-stakes date prediction.
