Month Command or Day Master First? (月令與日主)
Resolve the false choice between month command and Day Master: identify the reference self first, then use month command as primary seasonal evidence within a full chart.
Overview
Day Master and month command answer different questions. The Day Stem must be identified first because it defines the Ten Gods and reference self; the Month Branch must then be evaluated early because it supplies the principal seasonal frame. A sound reading does not choose one and ignore the other. It relates the Day Master to month command, roots, support, drain, control, and whole-chart structure.

Separate the reference from the environment
The Day Master tells the system whose relative relationships are being named. Without it, Ten Gods cannot be assigned.
Month command describes the strongest seasonal context around that reference. Without it, phase availability and many structural judgments lose their principal frame.
- Identify the reference before relative labels.
- Use month command before making strength claims.
Use a two-stage sequence, not an either-or rule
Read the Day Stem from the verified Day Pillar, then resolve the Month Branch from exact solar-term boundaries.
Compare the Day Master with season and immediately audit roots, visible support, drains, controls, combinations, and climate. The answer emerges from their relation.
- Calculate both anchors correctly.

Month command is primary evidence, not a veto
A Day Master out of season may still have strong roots and support; one in season may be heavily drained, controlled, combined, or rootless.
Classical methods and modern scoring systems can weight these factors differently, so a page should state the adopted method and show counterevidence.
- Do not infer strength from month alone.
- Show evidence that resists the seasonal first impression.
Do not derive personality from the two labels
Day Master imagery and birth season are technical inputs, not psychological tests or measures of human worth.
Use them to organize chart evidence, then keep health, career, money, and relationship claims conditional and grounded in real information.
- Avoid elemental personality stereotypes.
- Do not rank charts by one anchor.
