Favorable and Useful Gods in Bazi (喜用神)
Understand useful and favorable roles, why methods can select different priorities, and why a missing element is not automatically the one to add.
Overview
Useful and favorable gods are method-based roles assigned to phases or functions that help address a chart’s structural need. Strength balancing, pattern, climate, mediation, and remedy methods may prioritize different evidence. A candidate must be present or available, sufficiently supported, and able to reach the problem it is meant to address. The label is not a permanent lucky substance or lifestyle prescription.

State the method and problem first
Strength balancing asks how to regulate excess or deficiency; pattern method asks what sustains the chart structure; climate method addresses cold, heat, dryness, and dampness.
Mediation and remedy methods target a specific blockage or conflict. Their candidate phases should not be merged into one unexplained lucky list.

- Keep method-specific priorities separate.
A needed phase must also be usable
Check whether the candidate is rooted, exposed, seasonally viable, connected to the target, or blocked by combination and control.
A missing phase cannot perform a natal function merely because it sounds desirable. Timing may supply it temporarily, which must be dated.

- Show what weakens the candidate.
Compare competing candidates and counterevidence
Two methods may agree, rank different phases, or conflict under extreme structures. The output should preserve the method, priority, confidence, and invalidating conditions.
Useful, favorable, unfavorable, adverse, and neutral roles describe current function under that analysis—not eternal properties of an element.

- Allow a conclusion to remain unresolved.
Do not prescribe life choices from a phase label
A useful phase does not prescribe a color, object, name, food, city, career, treatment, partner, or investment.
Symbolic correspondences may support reflective discussion, but high-stakes decisions require direct evidence and relevant professional advice.
