Adjacent and Distant Heavenly-Stem Interactions (天干遠近)
Understand how pillar distance and intervening stems affect access, combination, control, and evidence without inventing a universal proximity score.
Overview
Adjacent stems usually have a more direct structural relationship than stems separated by another pillar, but distance is only one condition. A valid reading identifies the exact stems, pillar positions, intervening symbols, roots, competing combinations, and timing. Distant stems are not automatically inactive, and adjacent stems are not guaranteed to combine or produce a visible event.

Map pillar positions before judging access
Record whether the stems occupy neighboring pillars or are separated across the chart.
Also preserve year, month, day, and hour roles, because the same geometric distance can carry different structural context.
- Name both pillar positions.
- Do not erase the intervening pillar.
Distance works with roots and competing relations
A rooted distant stem may remain influential, while an adjacent but rootless stem may lack capacity to act.
A middle stem can create a chain, compete for combination, or redirect generation and control, so it must be evaluated explicitly.
- Check each stem’s support.
- Test every intervening relation.
Later timing can change access without changing the natal map
A luck pillar or annual stem may repeat, connect, or compete with a natal participant and make a previously weak relation more active.
Report that as a timing layer; the natal stems remain in their original positions and the event still requires real-world confirmation.

- Retain the original baseline.
Near does not mean certain and far does not mean absent
No classical proximity phrase can guarantee marriage, conflict, money, illness, or career change.
Avoid fabricated numerical weights unless a product exposes a documented deterministic model and its known limitations.
