How to Read Rooted Heavenly Stems (天干通根)
Verify a stem’s roots through branch hidden stems, then grade seasonal support, distance, damage, and competing relations without treating roots as absolute strength.
Overview
A Heavenly Stem is rooted when matching or supporting qi appears in the hidden stems of an Earthly Branch under the adopted rooting rule. Rooting increases structural support but varies by branch, season, hidden-stem rank, distance, and damage from interactions. One root does not automatically make a stem strong, and the absence of a direct root does not make it irrelevant if other support exists.

Identify the exact root before grading it
List the branch and hidden stem that supplies the proposed root and explain whether the rule requires the same phase or exact stem identity.
Different schools may grade indirect support differently, so the adopted convention must remain visible.

Root quality depends on season and hidden-stem rank
A main-qi root in season generally offers more support than residual qi in an unfavorable season.
Multiple roots can accumulate support, but their positions and current condition still matter; raw count is not enough.

Test whether the root remains accessible
A branch involved in combination, clash, punishment, harm, break, tomb, or void may change how its hidden qi supports the stem.
Do not automatically erase a root: state the exact rule, competing relation, and whether the effect is partial, conditional, or timing-dependent.

- Report partial support honestly.
Rooted does not mean invulnerable or fortunate
A rooted stem can still be excessive, poorly directed, controlled, or unfavorable to the chart’s working structure.
Rooting cannot prove health, resilience, family support, job security, or survival. Those claims need direct evidence.
