How to Assess Heavenly-Stem Strength (天干強弱)
Assess a stem through month command, root quality, support, drains, control, combination, position, and timing instead of counting matching symbols.
Overview
Heavenly-Stem strength is an evidence-weighted assessment, not a count. Begin with seasonal command, then identify direct and indirect roots, supporting generation, same-phase assistance, drains, control, combinations, and access by pillar position. Report a strength range with supporting and contrary evidence; do not confuse strength with usefulness, moral value, or guaranteed outcomes.

Start with the resolved seasonal environment
Determine the month command and how the stem’s phase is supported, released, controlled, or dormant in that season.
Near solar-term boundaries, expose uncertainty rather than claiming exact strength from an unstable month assignment.
- Resolve time before strength.
- State seasonal support explicitly.
Grade roots and visible support
Identify main, middle, and residual roots under the chosen hidden-stem convention, including their distance and current condition.
Then add generating and same-phase support while keeping each source separate so evidence is not counted twice.

Subtract drains, control, binding, and obstruction
A stem may expend itself through generation, meet effective control, become bound in a combination, or lose access to a damaged root.
Competing forces can offset one another, so a good assessment includes both supporting and weakening evidence before selecting a range.

- Use ranges instead of fake decimals.
Strong is not good and weak is not bad
A strong stem may be excessive or poorly directed; a weaker stem may fit the chart’s structure and timing better.
Strength cannot diagnose health, character, resilience, wealth, or success, and it should not drive high-stakes decisions by itself.
