How to Read a Stem Seated on a Branch (天干坐支)
Read each pillar as a stem-branch unit by checking branch phase, hidden stems, roots, Twelve Life Stage, and interactions without using one label as destiny.
Overview
A stem seated on a branch means the visible Heavenly Stem and the Earthly Branch occupying the same pillar must be read together. Begin with their phase relation, then inspect hidden stems, root support, seasonal condition, Twelve Life Stage, and interactions affecting either layer. A phrase such as “seated on Wealth” or “seated on a tomb” describes structure, not a guaranteed life outcome.

Start with the same-pillar phase relation
Determine whether the branch supports, drains, controls, is controlled by, or shares phase with the visible stem.
This establishes direction, but not strength; month command and the rest of the chart decide how much the relation can operate.
- Name the phase relation.
- Do not infer outcome from direction alone.
Add season, position, and interactions
A Day Stem seated on the Day Branch has a different reference role from a Year Stem seated on the Year Branch.
Combinations, clashes, harms, punishments, and later timing may affect the branch or its root, so a static seated label can change in effective expression.
- Keep pillar role explicit.
- Check relations affecting both layers.
“Seated on” does not mean an event is guaranteed
Terms such as seated on Wealth, Officer, Resource, or a tomb do not prove wealth, marriage, office, education, death, or illness.
Use them as structural descriptions and require current, direct evidence for consequential real-world conclusions.
