Unrooted Heavenly Stems (天干虛浮無根)
Understand what “floating and rootless” means, how to check hidden stems and indirect support, and why an unrooted stem is not automatically absent or useless.
Overview
An unrooted Heavenly Stem lacks a qualifying root in the natal branches under the stated method. “Floating” describes limited anchoring, not nonexistence: the stem remains visible and may receive seasonal support, generation, combination, or later roots from luck cycles. Its effect must be compared with control, drains, position, and timing rather than dismissed from one label.

Confirm absence under an explicit rooting rule
Inspect all branch hidden stems before calling a visible stem rootless, including main, middle, and residual qi where applicable.
State whether same-phase roots count or an exact-stem match is required, because the conclusion can differ by convention.

Rootless does not mean unsupported in every way
Month command, neighboring generation, same-phase assistance, or a combination can still affect the stem’s availability.
These forms of support are not identical to a root, so record them separately rather than relabeling the stem as rooted.

Timing can add or remove practical anchoring
A luck pillar or annual branch may introduce matching hidden qi and temporarily give the stem a root.
That later condition belongs to the timing layer and should not be written back into the natal chart as if it were always present.

A rootless stem does not prove weak character, homelessness, poor health, lack of family, career failure, or short life.
