Yang Stems and Yin Stems: Differences and Limits (陽干陰干)
Compare yang and yin stems within each element without turning classical imagery into fixed personality, gender, strength, or outcome claims.
Overview
Yang and yin stems form paired expressions within each Five-Element phase: Jia–Yi, Bing–Ding, Wu–Ji, Geng–Xin, and Ren–Gui. Classical imagery often contrasts direct and diffuse, visible and refined, or large-scale and focused modes. These are interpretive comparisons, not universal personality facts; season, roots, position, and relation decide how a particular stem can function.

Compare stems inside the same phase pair
A useful comparison holds the element constant, then examines how polarity differentiates the two stems.
Comparing Jia with Ding mixes both phase and polarity, so it cannot isolate what yin or yang contributes.

- Change one variable at a time.
Chart evidence can reverse a simple image
A yang stem without roots may act less visibly than a well-supported yin partner, despite broad imagery about outward expression.
A yin stem can be prominent when revealed, seasonally supported, and connected to the chart’s main structure.
- Check root and month command.
- Do not let imagery override evidence.
Use polarity to refine relations and Ten Gods
Polarity helps distinguish paired Ten Gods and identifies the fixed participants in the five Heavenly-Stem combinations.
It should refine a calculated relation after phase and position are known, not become a stand-alone score of capability.
- Calculate the relation first.
- Describe mode only after strength.
Yang is not male and yin is not female
Stem polarity cannot determine sex, gender, orientation, dominance, intelligence, emotionality, or social value.
Neither category is inherently fortunate, modern, healthy, or strong. Consequential judgments require direct evidence.
- Reject demographic stereotypes.
- Do not rank paired stems.
