The Day Stem and Other Heavenly Stems (日干關係)
Use the Day Stem as the Ten-God reference while preserving each other stem’s pillar, strength, roots, interactions, and separate chart function.
Overview
The Day Stem is the reference point used to derive the Ten-God relation of every other stem, but it is not the only important symbol in the chart. Each year, month, and hour stem retains its own pillar context, strength, roots, and interactions. A sound reading derives the relation first, then evaluates whether that function is available, excessive, constrained, combined, or activated by timing.

Derive every visible relation from the Day Stem
Compare the other stem’s Five-Element phase with the Day Stem, then use polarity to select the precise Ten-God label.
This is deterministic classification. Interpretive keywords come later and must remain tied to position and effective strength.
- Use one stable Day-Stem reference.
- Keep derivation separate from meaning.
Preserve the pillar occupied by the other stem
A Month Stem participates in the chart’s structural center differently from a Year or Hour Stem, even when the Ten-God label matches.
Distance from the Day Stem can affect direct access, while the branch beneath each stem supplies roots and additional relations.
- Name the pillar.
- Read the stem with its branch.
Evaluate the whole stem network, not isolated pairs
Other stems may generate, control, combine, clash, or compete with one another before their relation to the Day Stem becomes effective.
Month command and roots determine capacity, and later timing can activate one route without erasing the remaining network.
- Resolve competing relations.
- Retain dormant and active paths.
The Day Stem is not the whole person
Neither the Day Stem nor a single Ten-God relation can define personality, family, marriage, career, health, morality, or future events.
Use the model for structured cultural interpretation and direct evidence for consequential personal decisions.
- Avoid identity reduction.
- No life verdict from one relation.
