How Precise Must Birth Time Be for Bazi?

The most precise trustworthy birth time is best because it makes the chart reproducible, but Bazi does not require invented minute-level certainty. What matters is whether the plausible time interval crosses a calculation boundary after historical time-zone and selected solar-time corrections. If every plausible minute stays within the same hour branch, day boundary and exact solar-term interval, the Four Pillars are stable. If the interval crosses a boundary, OpenFate keeps the original precision and compares labeled candidates rather than defaulting to noon or choosing a chart by interpretation.

Preserve the precision of the source instead of manufacturing certainty

A certificate recorded to the minute, a family memory such as “around dawn,” and an unknown time are different evidence. Store what the source actually supports, together with its provenance and confidence.

Appending :00 to a remembered hour can make an approximate record look exact. A reproducible chart keeps the original interval and every later assumption visible.

Minutes matter when the plausible interval reaches a calculation boundary

Resolve the complete interval through the birthplace’s historical time zone and the selected civil, mean-solar or apparent-solar method. Then test hour-branch limits, the configured day boundary and nearby solar-term instants.

An interval wholly inside the same boundaries produces one stable Four-Pillars result. A narrow interval can still be sensitive when the birth is close to a cutoff.

Show candidate charts only when the calculation actually differs

When the interval crosses a boundary, calculate each distinct outcome with identical settings and label the time range that produces it. Deduplicate candidates whose Four Pillars are the same.

Do not rank candidates by which interpretation feels more accurate. Later rectification may use dated evidence, but it remains a documented comparison rather than proof of an exact minute.

More digits do not repair uncertain history or weak evidence

Historical offsets, coordinates and record transcription may introduce more uncertainty than the written minute. A calculator should disclose those inputs rather than imply mathematical precision guarantees historical accuracy.

If no birth hour is known, hour-dependent interpretation must remain unavailable or clearly provisional. The Year, Month and Day Pillars can still be discussed only when their own boundaries are securely resolved.
