Overview

A valid February 29 birth is handled as its actual chronological date; it does not require a special symbolic pillar or a duplicated birthday rule. Under the Gregorian calendar, years divisible by four are leap years except century years not divisible by four hundred. Once the local date and calendar system are validated, the Day Pillar advances through the same uninterrupted sixty-day cycle used for every other date. The Year and Month Pillars still follow their solar-term boundaries, so neither Lunar New Year nor the existence of February 29 replaces Li Chun and Jie calculations.

Validate February 29 under the recorded calendar

Modern civil records usually use the Gregorian calendar, where the 400-year rule determines whether February 29 exists. A date parser must reject February 29 in a common year rather than silently moving it to February 28 or March 1.

For historical records, identify whether the source used the Julian, Gregorian or another civil calendar before applying a modern leap-year rule.

  • Reject impossible dates instead of normalizing them.

The sexagenary day sequence does not pause or repeat

After conversion to a continuous day count, February 29 occupies one ordinary chronological day between February 28 and March 1. The sexagenary day index advances by one across both boundaries.

A calculator should verify the adjacent-day invariant and must not reuse February 28’s Day Pillar or skip directly to the March 1 value.

  • Use one documented day-count epoch.

Year and Month Pillars still depend on solar-term instants

The Gregorian leap day changes the civil calendar’s month length, not the Bazi solar-month sequence. Calculate the Year boundary and current Jie exactly as for any other birth date.

A February 29 birth is normally after Li Chun, but the engine should derive that result from the actual year’s term instant rather than a hard-coded month assumption.

  • Do not use Lunar New Year as a substitute.
  • Keep civil leap rules separate from solar-term rules.

Leap-day rarity is not an independent Bazi judgment

Being born on a date that appears every four years in the Gregorian display does not create an extra element, Ten God or destiny category. The chart is interpreted from its resolved pillars and relationships.

Birthday observance in non-leap years is a social or legal question, not a recalculation of the natal Four Pillars. The original birth instant remains fixed.

  • Do not invent a leap-day personality label.
  • Never shift the natal chart to an observed birthday.
