Julian and Gregorian dates can use the same month and day words for different chronological days. The Gregorian reform changed leap-year rules and omitted dates when jurisdictions adopted it, but adoption occurred in different places and years. A historical Bazi calculation must therefore preserve the source date, birthplace and calendar label, convert that combination to one continuous day number, and only then calculate the pillars. Applying a universal ten-day or thirteen-day shift, or assuming every pre-1582 date is Julian, can assign the wrong Day Pillar and nearby solar-term side.

Calendar labels describe dates, not two different skies

Both calendars organize civil years and months, but their leap-year rules make their date labels drift relative to each other over centuries. One physical instant has different written dates in the two systems.

Bazi solar terms and the day cycle belong to the chronological timeline. The calendar label is an input needed to locate the correct point on that timeline.

Historical adoption cannot be inferred from the year alone

The 1582 reform did not switch the whole world at once. Countries, regions and institutions adopted the Gregorian calendar on different dates, and some records continued to use another style.

Use the birthplace jurisdiction and provenance of the record. If the style is not stated and cannot be established, return labeled candidates rather than silently choosing one.

Convert to a continuous day count before calculating pillars

Validate the date under its declared calendar, then convert it to a Julian Day or another documented continuous count. Use that single timeline for the sexagenary day index and solar-term comparison.

Do not add a memorized ten or thirteen days without considering the century. The calendar gap changes because the Julian and Gregorian leap rules diverge over time.

  • Keep the original and normalized dates side by side.

Calendar conversion precedes time-zone and Bazi boundary rules

Once the civil date is located, resolve the historical local time and offset, then apply the chosen solar-time and day-boundary conventions. These are separate stages and should not be hidden inside a date shift.

Report which stage changes the result. A calendar conversion is chronology, not a symbolic indication of personality or fortune.
