Solar Longitude and the 24 Solar Terms
Learn how twenty-four 15-degree solar-longitude crossings define the solar terms and which twelve crossings change a Bazi Month Pillar.
Overview
The twenty-four solar terms are astronomical longitude markers, not equal blocks of civil days. They occur when the Sun’s apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude reaches successive 15-degree targets, so the interval between terms varies slightly through the year. Bazi uses this same ordered cycle, but only the twelve Jie open new solar months; the alternating Zhongqi retain their calendar role without causing another Month-Pillar change. A chart must compare the birth instant with the calculated crossing in one declared time standard instead of treating the printed calendar date as the full boundary.

Solar longitude supplies a repeatable astronomical coordinate
Apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude describes the Sun’s observed position along the ecliptic from the seasonal zero point. A complete cycle covers 360 degrees, and each successive 15-degree target names one solar term.
The coordinate is independent of local language and civil calendar labels. Localized term names describe the same ordered astronomical crossings.

Equal longitude steps do not create equal clock intervals
Earth’s orbital speed and the apparent solar motion are not perfectly uniform, so neighboring crossings are not separated by an identical number of hours. A rough fifteen-day estimate is useful for orientation but cannot establish a boundary.
The calculated crossing needs a year-specific ephemeris and sufficient timestamp precision. Copying last year’s clock time or assuming local midnight can change a near-boundary chart.

Bazi month changes use twelve Jie rather than all twenty-four terms
The solar terms alternate between Jie and Zhongqi. Li Chun opens the Yin month, Jing Zhe opens Mao, and the sequence continues through Xiao Han opening Chou.
At a Jie crossing, calculate the new Month Branch and derive its Month Stem from the effective Year Stem. A Zhongqi does not create a second Month-Pillar transition.

Save the astronomical instant before converting it for display
A robust calculation stores the crossing in a continuous standard such as UTC, along with the ephemeris version and precision. It then converts the instant to the birthplace time zone for comparison with the birth record.
Solar longitude has no standalone Ten God, element or personality meaning. Its role here is to determine a calendar boundary; interpretation begins only after the Four Pillars are resolved.
