Overview

Mercury mahadasha is a seventeen-model-year main period in Vimshottari, following Saturn and preceding Ketu. Its subperiod sequence wraps through Ketu and Venus after Mercury itself. It is not a seventeen-year Mercury retrograde.

How does the sequence wrap after Mercury?

The ruler cycle returns from Mercury to Ketu rather than ending the timing system. Inside Mercury mahadasha, the antardashas also begin Mercury, Ketu, Venus, then continue through the established order. Do not replace Ketu with Sun simply because a table is printed starting with Sun.

Retrograde motion concerns an apparent change in a planet’s geocentric movement and belongs to a different calculation. Mercury mahadasha cannot by itself prove communication problems, commercial success or learning ability. Period labels are not performance assessments.

Locate Mercury/Venus without losing the wrap

Mercury/Mercury lasts 17 × 17 / 120 = 289/120 model years. Mercury/Ketu follows for 119/120, so the first two together end at 408/120 = 3.4 years. Mercury/Venus then lasts 17 × 20 / 120 = 17/6 years.

A target at elapsed four model years therefore falls in Mercury/Venus. Its endpoint is 3.4 + 17/6 = 187/30 model years. These offsets start at the full Mercury parent, not automatically at birth; a remaining birth balance needs its own positioning.

What should I check before an interpretation?

First confirm the target instant, full parent start and explicit year convention. Keep fractional arithmetic until converting to timestamps. If the birth time is unresolved near a lunar or subperiod boundary, retain the alternative timelines rather than forcing one label.
