Overview

Dasha systems are distinct sets of rules for arranging named periods. Vimshottari is a nakshatra-based, planet-ruled system; other methods include sign-ruled sequences. Their inputs, eligibility rules and duration recipes must be identified before comparing their timelines.

What kinds of dasha does the source distinguish?

Rao’s Part II introduction distinguishes nakshatra-based and rashi-based methods and names Vimshottari, Ashtottari, Narayana and other systems. These categories describe a practitioner’s method family, not scientific evidence that its periods cause events.

“Nakshatra-based” describes the starting framework, while “planet-ruled” describes period labels; those are different classification questions. Avoid assuming that every nakshatra-based method uses Vimshottari’s nine lengths or that every sign-ruled method uses the same twelve-sign order.

A method comparison is not a vote

Imagine one report headed “Moon-nakshatra Vimshottari” and another headed “Narayana dasha.” The first can display a Mercury main period while the second displays a sign period. Those labels are not contradictory answers to an identical calculation.

Build a comparison sheet with the stated birth input, start rule, ruler type, duration recipe and calendar convention. If either report omits them, stop before comparing event narratives. Agreement between narratives is not a substitute for reconstructing the two methods.

Which system does this learning path implement?

The locally reviewed OpenFate policy declares Vimshottari only; it does not expose alternate dasha engines simply because this guide mentions them. Check the actual report’s policy version before assuming that any textbook variant can be selected in the product.

Learn the standard Moon-nakshatra method on the Vimshottari page, then its birth-balance calculation. With uncertain birth time, carry an input interval rather than choosing the system whose story fits best. This page compares methods and does not offer mortality or fate prediction recipes.
