Moon Mahadasha: Ten Years and the Birth-Balance Rule
Understand Moon mahadasha, its ten-year full length and how the natal Moon determines a remaining balance. Distinguish it from lunar phases.
Overview
Moon mahadasha is a ten-model-year main period in Vimshottari, after Sun and before Mars. The natal Moon also supplies the starting nakshatra for this system, but that does not mean everyone begins life in Moon mahadasha.

Why does the Moon have two roles here?
The natal Moon’s nakshatra selects the first ruler, which may be any of the nine rulers. Moon also has its own ten-year slot in the repeating sequence. Confusing those roles produces the mistaken idea that every chart starts with a full Moon period.
A full Moon, new Moon or monthly sign change is a sky event and does not restart Moon mahadasha. Traditional emotional language likewise does not make the period a mental-health assessment. Separate the astronomical input, period label and any symbolic discussion.
A remaining quarter of a Moon-ruled nakshatra
Take an artificial Moon with 200 arcminutes left in a Moon-ruled nakshatra. Its remaining fraction is 200/800 = 1/4, so the birth balance is 10 × 1/4 = 2.5 model years. The full parent began 7.5 model years before birth.
The first Moon/Moon subperiod, lasting 10 × 10 / 120 = 5/6 model years, is long past at that birth point. A display of “Moon, 2.5 years remaining” therefore does not imply “Moon/Moon now.” Locate the subperiod on the complete parent timeline.
How precise can a Moon-period date be?
Even without a lagna-based interpretation, this calculation still needs a sufficiently reliable lunar position and birth instant. A date-only birth record can leave the balance uncertain. Do not claim that dasha calculations are automatically immune to missing birth time.
Use the current-dasha worked example to test the interval and disclose the chosen year convention. If the input crosses a nakshatra or subperiod boundary, show the uncertainty. Neither the ruler nor the duration proves an emotional state or a future family event.
