Moolatrikona: Meaning and Degree Conventions

Overview

Moolatrikona is a traditional dignity category, often assigned to a specified part of a planet’s associated sign. It is not another planet or a separate chart. A broad sign label and a finer moolatrikona degree segment can coexist, so the convention must be recorded.

Why can two dignity labels appear together?

Sign ownership answers which signs belong to a planet in the adopted system. Moolatrikona adds another traditional classification, sometimes limited to a degree range within that sign. Software displaying both is not necessarily contradicting itself; it may be reporting two levels of detail.

The cited degree notes distinguish Saturn’s first 20° of Aquarius from the remaining 10°. Other planets have their own conventions. Do not infer every range from Saturn’s example or silently blend tables from different schools.

Saturn at Aquarius 12° and 24°

Take synthetic Saturn longitudes 312° and 324°. Subtract Aquarius’s starting 300° to get 12° and 24°. Both are in a Saturn-owned sign under the seven-planet scheme. The first falls within the cited first-20° moolatrikona segment; the second is in the remaining own-sign segment.

Neither coordinate sits exactly on the 20° boundary. If a real report does, check the implementation’s interval convention instead of assuming two programs handle the endpoint identically. This is a classification exercise, not evidence that a person abruptly changes at a degree boundary.

How to use a moolatrikona table responsibly

Keep the planet’s actual motion, house role and associations separate. The category is not a complete measure of strength or a promise that a dasha will be favorable. A sign-only display also cannot prove membership in a narrower degree segment.

Consult own sign and exaltation for the neighboring concepts. Source consistency matters: this guide does not reuse the cited book’s contradictory Mars prose note to invent a settled Mars range. It uses the explicitly stated Saturn example and keeps other disputed conventions open to verification.
