Natural versus Functional Benefics and Malefics
Separate a planet’s traditional natural class from lagna-based house responsibilities. A Saturn comparison shows why benefic and malefic labels can differ.
Overview
Natural benefic or malefic is a traditional classification of a planet, with conditions for the Moon and Mercury. Functional classification concerns that planet’s house responsibilities in a particular chart. They describe different layers and are not judgments of a person’s goodness or worth.

Why can the same planet carry different labels?
Rao’s functional-nature discussion lists Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon and well-associated Mercury among natural benefics, and includes Saturn among natural malefics. These are traditional categories, with explicit lunar and Mercury conditions rather than permanent labels for every possible state.
Functional nature is assessed through owned houses from lagna. A planet owning two signs can carry more than one responsibility, so a single house rule should not be isolated from the second. The term yogakaraka also needs its stated combination of quadrant and trine ownership.
Saturn for Taurus versus Aries lagna
With Taurus lagna and whole-sign houses, Capricorn is ninth and Aquarius tenth. Saturn owns both, and the cited table treats it as yogakaraka in that configuration. Its natural classification has not been erased; the house-role statement is a separate layer.
Change the teaching reference to Aries. Capricorn is now tenth and Aquarius eleventh; the same source classifies Saturn differently functionally. Saturn need not move anywhere for this comparison: changing lagna changes the owned house numbers. These are two hypothetical reference charts, not a way to alter an existing birth record.
What a benefic label does not prove
Neither kind of benefic guarantees a favorable event, and malefic is not a judgment of moral character. Keep the planet’s position, associations and the relevant question separate from its category. Moon phase or Mercury association cannot be invented when missing.
For disputed labels, compare the declared lagna and the complete ownership table rather than judging from a biography. Medical, relationship and financial decisions require independent evidence. This page explains the distinction, not a rule for rating people as beneficial or harmful.
