Own Sign in Vedic Astrology
Check whether a planet occupies a sign it rules. Learn the seven-planet ownership map, two Mercury examples and why a host ruler does not change the occupant.
Overview
A planet is in its own sign, or swa rashi, when it occupies a zodiac sign assigned to that same planet in the adopted rulership scheme. The occupant and the sign’s ruler must match. This is a chart relationship, not a statement that the planet owns a person or controls their choices.

Which signs belong to which planets?
The Sun owns Leo and the Moon Cancer. Mars owns Aries and Scorpio; Mercury Gemini and Virgo; Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces; Venus Taurus and Libra; Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius. This is the seven-planet ownership map used here, not a universal node or outer-planet scheme.
Occupying a sign ruled by a friend is a different relationship from occupying one’s own sign. A planet’s house ownership is different again: it depends on which houses its signs occupy from the chosen chart reference.
Two valid Mercury cases and a counterexample
Synthetic Mercury at 75° is Gemini 15°, while Mercury at 175° is Virgo 25°. Both satisfy the own-sign test because Mercury owns both signs. A further degree-specific dignity label may differ; ownership itself remains the same.
Venus at 75° is also in Gemini, but Gemini belongs to Mercury. Venus is therefore not in its own sign in this example. Knowing the host ruler identifies whom to examine next; it does not change Venus into Mercury or supply Mercury’s unprovided position.
Does own sign mean the planet gives only good results?
Ownership alone does not include the relevant house roles, angular relationships, motion or timing method. A report saying “own sign” should be understood as one verified classification, not as evidence that every other condition has been checked.
Use the planetary friendship guide for a host relationship and moolatrikona for degree subdivisions. Do not use an own-sign badge as a financial, medical or relationship guarantee. Preserve the actual coordinate and rule so another reader can reproduce the label.
