Planetary Friendship and Enmity in Vedic Astrology
Distinguish natural and temporary planetary relationships. A Mercury–Moon example shows why friendship may be directional and how compound labels are formed.
Overview
Planetary friendship is a traditional relationship between named planets, not a measure of friendship between people. Natural relationships come from a table; temporary relationships depend on the occupied signs; compound relationships combine the two. State which layer and direction you mean.

- Natural relationship need not be reciprocal
Three layers, not one friendship score
In the cited natural table, Mercury treats the Moon as an enemy while the Moon treats Mercury as a friend. Read the row in the stated direction. Assuming every relationship is symmetric can therefore change the result before any chart positions are considered.
The temporary rule treats planets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th signs from the source as temporary friends; the remaining signs are temporary enemies. The compound table then combines natural and temporary categories. These terms classify a method, not human emotions.
Mercury in Virgo and Moon in Cancer
Put synthetic Mercury at Virgo 12° and Moon at Cancer 8°. Cancer is eleventh from Virgo; Virgo is third from Cancer. They are temporary friends in both directions. Mercury’s natural enemy plus temporary friend gives a compound neutral relationship toward the Moon.
In the reverse direction, the Moon’s natural friend plus temporary friend gives the compound good-friend category toward Mercury. The coordinate pair is the same, but the directed natural rows differ. Neither label says the native will like or dislike a particular person.
What must be supplied before checking a friendly sign?
To classify an occupant’s relationship with its host ruler, identify both planets, their positions and which natural/temporary/compound convention is intended. A host’s name alone does not supply its actual chart position. A generic friendly-sign badge may hide this distinction.
Use the own-sign guide when the occupant itself owns the sign; that is not the same question as friendliness. Do not turn planetary enmity into accusations about partners or coworkers. The table supports a reproducible traditional label, not interpersonal evidence.
