Retrograde Planets in Vedic Astrology
Read retrograde from a planet’s longitude speed, not a personality label. Learn wraparound, stations and why apparent backward motion is not a reversed orbit.
Overview
Retrograde describes apparent backward motion relative to a stated observer and coordinate frame. In an ordinary geocentric longitude report, negative longitude speed identifies that motion. The planet has not reversed its orbit around the Sun; astrological interpretations are a separate layer.

What does the retrograde flag actually measure?
NASA’s explanation distinguishes apparent retrograde motion from an orbital reversal. For a chart, preserve the observer, timestamp and coordinate settings. Swiss Ephemeris reports longitude speed in degrees per day; a sign name or one longitude sample cannot tell you the direction of motion.
Traditional readings may discuss retrograde status, but the numerical flag does not establish their causal validity. A natal retrograde placement and a current transit retrograde also concern different timestamps. Do not use one as a substitute for the other.
Crossing 0° is not necessarily retrograde
Take two invented positions one day apart: 359.90° followed by 0.05°. Unwrap the second as 360.05° to obtain +0.15°, rather than the misleading raw subtraction −359.85°. This exercise describes forward movement across the zero point, not a real ephemeris observation.
A separate geocentric speed of −0.12°/day indicates retrograde longitude motion in the stated report. Near zero, a rounded “0.00” cannot reliably distinguish a station from a small positive or negative speed. Use higher precision or an explicitly defined station threshold.
Does retrograde reverse aspects or cancel dignity?
Motion alone does not change the sign-ownership table or silently reverse the inclusive counting used in the full graha-aspect convention on this site. A method that modifies a rule because of retrogradation must name and justify that additional rule.
Retrograde status cannot diagnose mistakes, relationship failure or a need to postpone care. Inspect the relevant practical evidence independently. This is an evergreen definition, not a live retrograde calendar or a claim that any planet is retrograde today.
