Wu Xing (五行): the Five Elements in Bazi
Understand Wu Xing as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water phase relations, how Bazi derives them, and why element counts alone do not decide balance.
Overview
Wu Xing (五行), commonly translated as the Five Elements or Five Phases, organizes Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water through generation, control, season and transformation. OpenFate derives phase from the chart’s stems, branches and hidden stems, then keeps month command, roots, combinations and clashes as separate evidence. A simple count of visible characters cannot establish balance, strength or a favorable element. The model is traditional symbolic classification, not the modern chemical elements and not a medical nutrient system.

Wu Xing means five changing phases, not five physical materials
The classical model describes recurring modes and their relations. Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water and Water generates Wood; the controlling sequence answers a different question.
Translations use “elements,” but the system does not claim that chart symbols are literal quantities of wood, flame, soil, metal or liquid inside a person.
- Retain both the Chinese term and clear English gloss.
- Separate symbolic phases from physical substances.
Visible counts are only the beginning of phase analysis
A Bazi chart contains eight visible stem–branch characters, yet branches also hold hidden stems and occur in seasons with unequal support. Roots, transparency, combinations and clashes can change how evidence is weighed.
“Three Water characters” therefore does not by itself mean excess Water, and a phase absent from the visible row may still exist in hidden stems or cycles.
- Inspect hidden stems and month command.
- Do not diagnose balance from an eight-character count.
OpenFate keeps deterministic phase data and interpretation separate
The engine maps every canonical stem and branch to a fixed phase, then calculates other structures through their own modules. Wiki pages explain those mappings without altering saved reports.
Favorable-element, climate-regulation and pattern conclusions require additional rules. They are not copied from the least frequent color or the phase a user prefers.
- Use one canonical phase mapping.
- Require the relevant downstream model before advice.
Five-Phase labels are not medical or financial prescriptions
Wu Xing cannot diagnose an organ, deficiency, allergy, mental condition or nutritional need, nor prove that a color, food, job, city or investment will improve fortune.
Health, diet, work and financial choices need current evidence and qualified advice. Symbolic correspondences may be studied culturally but must not replace professional assessment.
- No diagnosis or treatment from a phase label.
- No purchase or investment guarantee from “balance.”
