Three Cycles and Nine Periods (三元九運)
Understand the 180-year Three Cycles and Nine Periods framework, its nine twenty-year periods, and why it is not a natal Bazi pillar.
Overview
Three Cycles and Nine Periods (三元九運) divides a 180-year sequence into Upper, Middle and Lower Cycles of sixty years, with each cycle containing three twenty-year periods. The framework belongs primarily to San Yuan calendrical and Feng Shui practice and is often used to discuss long environmental periods. It can provide historical context beside Bazi, but it is not one of the four natal pillars, Ten Gods or luck pillars. A period label alone cannot determine a person’s chart, property outcome or investment trend.

Three sixty-year cycles form one 180-year sequence
The Upper, Middle and Lower Cycles each span one sexagenary cycle. Dividing each into three parts yields nine named periods of twenty years.
The numbering is a calendrical framework. A page should state its epoch and convention rather than assuming every historical school uses an unlabeled modern table.

The framework describes macro time, not the natal four pillars
San Yuan and Feng Shui traditions use the periods for temporal context in spatial analysis. Bazi instead begins with the birth year, month, day and hour pillars.
A reader may compare both systems, but the Nine Period must remain a separate evidence layer. It cannot overwrite Month Command, Day Master or a luck pillar.
