Overview

Useful God (用神) is the primary functional role selected to address a chart’s stated analytical need under a declared method, such as structure, support and restraint, climate regulation or passage between opposed forces. Different methods can nominate different functions because they answer different questions. A defensible result names the problem, candidate, supporting and opposing evidence, and confidence. 用神 is not a deity, not automatically the least frequent element and not a prescription for colors, names, medicine, purchases or investments.

用神 answers a declared functional question

The term identifies what function is most useful to the chart under a particular analytical framework. It cannot be understood without naming the framework.

Support-and-restraint, climate regulation, structural pattern and mediation can prioritize different evidence. Disagreement may reflect method rather than a calculation error.

  • Name the method before the result.
  • State the chart problem the candidate addresses.

Selection requires evidence beyond a missing-element count

A phase absent from the visible eight characters may be present in hidden stems and may not solve the chart’s actual issue. Conversely, an already visible function can still be useful.

The selection should test season, roots, strength, pattern integrity, climate and relational flow only where the method requires them.

  • Reject “least frequent equals useful” shortcuts.
  • Publish supporting and opposing evidence.

Practical decisions require direct evidence and qualified advice. Traditional correspondences may be explained as cultural context without promising a cure or “luck activation.”
