Ge Ju (格局): Patterns and Structures in Bazi
Learn what Ge Ju means, how ordinary and special Bazi patterns are formed, which evidence can break them, and why a pattern name is not a destiny grade.
Overview
Ge Ju (格局), translated as pattern or structure, is a framework for organizing the dominant relationships in a Bazi chart. Ordinary approaches commonly begin with Month Command, visible and hidden Ten Gods, strength and usable relationships; special structures require their own stricter formation and failure conditions. Schools differ in naming and priority, so a page must declare the rule set it applies. A candidate pattern is not automatically successful, favorable or exclusive, and no pattern name measures human worth or guarantees wealth and status.

A Ge Ju is an analytical structure, not a decorative label
Classical pattern analysis asks which relationship is seasonally and structurally able to organize the chart. It is more than finding one matching character or memorable phrase.
The pattern must name its anchor, supporting evidence, obstructing evidence and the convention used. Without those parts, the label cannot be audited.
- Define the governing relation before interpretation.
- Attach every pattern to explicit evidence.
Ordinary and special patterns use different formation tests
Ordinary structures often start from the Month Branch and the effective Ten God it supports, then examine exposure, rooting, control and useful relationships.
Following, transforming and other special patterns demand stricter absence, dominance or transformation conditions. A chart that resembles a special pattern may remain an ordinary mixed structure.
- Use the correct rule family for the candidate.
- Record both formation and failure conditions.
OpenFate keeps candidate detection separate from final explanation
Deterministic chart data can surface possible structures and the evidence they rely on. Editorial text must preserve uncertainty when schools or thresholds differ.
One pattern should not silently erase competing evidence. Saved reports remain versioned snapshots, and Wiki publication does not retroactively change their calculation.
- Label candidates and supported patterns differently.
- Do not rewrite historical outputs through content changes.
Pattern names cannot guarantee class, wealth or outcomes
Ge Ju does not prove nobility, poverty, intelligence, morality, marriage quality, health, career rank or a fixed life path. Classical status language needs historical context.
Career, relationship, medical and financial decisions require present-day evidence. Use the framework to organize chart reasoning, not to rank people.
- No social or moral ranking from a pattern.
- No guaranteed event or outcome from a label.
