Earth can stabilize and connect, but it can also obstruct or absorb. Its function depends on dryness, moisture, season, and its relationship to the Day Master.

Earth describes containment, centralization, storage, transition, and the ability to make something concrete. Wu and Ji show different forms of that function.
How Earth relates to other elements
Fire can produce Earth, Earth can support Metal, Wood can open or control Earth, and Earth can contain Water. Dry and wet Earth behave differently.

Worked example and stop rule
Suppose Wu appears in the Month Stem, Chen and Chou appear below, and the chart is set in late winter with Gui Water visible. The inputs support visible Earth and two Earth-classified branches, but Chen and Chou are cold, damp storage branches with other hidden stems. Counting three Earth symbols cannot establish dry, stable, or favorable Earth.
A near-miss is a late-summer chart with Wu and Ji visible, Fire support, and no effective Wood regulation. It may show stronger and drier Earth, but a complete judgment still checks the Day Master, storage contents, Water movement, and whether Earth is supporting or obstructing the chart.
