Five-Element Circulation (五行流通)
Learn how a Bazi chart forms connected generating paths, where the flow begins and ends, and why circulation is not automatically balanced or favorable.
Overview
Five-Element circulation is an interpretive description of a connected path through which effective phase relations can proceed. It requires an identifiable source, one or more usable links, and an outlet or destination; merely displaying all five elements does not create circulation. Season, roots, exposure, position, control, and competing relations determine whether the path is active, partial, redirected, or blocked.
At a glance
- Minimum structure
- Source, connected links, and outlet
- Link type
- Effective generation or regulated control
- Activation evidence
- Season, roots, exposure, and access
- Possible states
- Active, partial, redirected, or blocked
- Not sufficient
- All five phases merely being present
- Boundary
- Flow is not a success or health guarantee
Map a real path rather than a circular slogan
Choose a starting function and follow each effective generating or regulating relation to its destination.
A full five-phase loop is not required, but every claimed link needs actual participants and chart support.
- Draw the source-to-outlet path.
- Verify every transition.
A visible phase may not carry the path
A rootless stem, deeply concealed qi, seasonally exhausted phase, or combined-away participant may contribute little to circulation.
Conversely, one rooted and seasonally supported symbol may keep a short path effective even when its phase appears only once.
- Distinguish presence from capacity.
- Use seasonal and rooting evidence.
Charts can contain several competing flows
One chain may feed a needed function while another drains or controls the same source. Distance and timing can activate them differently.
Report the main path, secondary paths, interruptions, and unresolved pressure rather than forcing one smooth narrative.
- Retain competing paths.
- Label partial circulation honestly.
Circulation is not a guarantee of ease or vitality
五行流通 cannot prove health, wealth, productivity, emotional regulation, social mobility, or a life without conflict.
Do not turn symbolic flow into medical circulation language or market products as a way to “open” a chart.
- Avoid medical literalization.
- No product or outcome guarantee.
