Overview

The overcoming cycle follows Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, and Metal controls Wood. Interpretation begins by identifying controller and target, then comparing effective strength, position, distance, mediation, and competing support. Appropriate control can create structure; excessive control, failed control, or counter-control can produce different states. The relation is not automatically harmful.

Identify controller, target, and location

Locate the participating phases and state which one controls the other under the canonical cycle.

Distinguish visible stems, branch contents, same-pillar contact, adjacent contact, and distant relations because availability differs.

  • Keep direction explicit.
  • Record each participant’s position.

Compare effective capacity on both sides

Season, roots, exposure, support, drain, and combinations determine whether the controller can act and whether the target can resist.

A weak controller may fail or provoke counter-control; an overwhelming controller may damage a function that the chart needs.

  • Assess both sides independently.
  • Test failed and reversed outcomes.

Check regulation, passage, and competing relations

A third phase can create a generating passage that redirects direct control, while combinations or clashes may alter access.

Useful regulation and destructive pressure are conclusions drawn from the whole path, not from the word 剋 itself.

  • Search for a mediating phase.
  • Explain what changes after mediation.

Control is not violence, illness, or failure

相剋 cannot by itself prove conflict, abuse, disease, accident, job loss, legal trouble, or relationship breakdown.

Use direct real-world evidence for risk and safety decisions, and avoid stigmatizing a person because one phase controls another.

  • Do not literalize the metaphor.
  • No safety verdict from one relation.
