Mutual Rooting of Yin and Yang (陰陽互根)
Understand why yin and yang are defined through one another, how fixed stem-branch polarity remains intact, and where this principle stops in Bazi reading.
Overview
Mutual rooting of yin and yang means that each pole is intelligible only in relation to its counterpart. In Bazi, every stem and branch keeps a fixed yin or yang classification, while support, control, exposure, concealment, and seasonal change show how paired functions depend on each other. The principle does not let an interpreter flip a symbol’s polarity or invent a favorable result without chart evidence.

Mutual rooting describes interdependence, not sameness
Yin and yang form a relational distinction: hidden and expressed, receiving and acting, or contracting and expanding gain meaning through contrast.
Interdependence does not collapse the two categories. A yin stem remains yin and a yang branch remains yang throughout the chart calculation.

The chart must show how the functions support one another
A reading can examine whether visible stems have branch roots, whether concealed qi can become effective, and whether generation or control connects the two sides.
Month command, distance, combination, clash, and timing may strengthen or limit that connection; the phrase alone supplies no score.
- Name the participating symbols.
- Show the rule that connects them.
Classify first, then evaluate effective relation
Start with canonical polarity and phase, then locate each symbol and its roots before assessing interactions.
Only after those facts are stable should the interpreter describe complementarity, dependence, tension, or lack of support.

Interdependence is not a personality or relationship verdict
陰陽互根 cannot prove that two people are compatible, that a chart is balanced, or that every tension will resolve itself.
It also cannot establish gender identity, health, fertility, morality, or a future event. Those claims require direct evidence outside Bazi.

- Do not promise harmony from a general principle.
