How to Read the Five-Element Generating Cycle (五行相生)
Read Wood–Fire–Earth–Metal–Water generation by source, recipient, strength, position, and outcome instead of treating every generating link as favorable.
Overview
The generating cycle follows Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood, but detecting the pair is only the first step. A useful reading identifies the source and recipient, checks whether the source can provide support, whether the recipient can receive it, and how position, season, roots, and competing relations modify the link. Generation may nourish one function while draining another, so it is not automatically favorable.

Identify the exact source and recipient
First locate two chart functions whose phases follow the canonical generating sequence and state the direction of the link.
Keep the original stems, branches, hidden stems, and pillar positions visible; a phase label alone loses necessary context.
- Name both participants.
- Preserve direction and position.
Check whether the source can give and the recipient can receive
A seasonally weak, rootless, controlled, or combined source may have limited capacity to generate another phase.
An already excessive or obstructed recipient may not benefit from more support, while a needed recipient may convert the link into useful flow.
- Assess source capacity.
- Assess recipient condition.
Trace the link through the rest of the chart
Generation can create a chain, open a passage between conflicting phases, or divert strength away from another function.
Competing control, combinations, clashes, distance, and timing may interrupt or redirect the result. State the supported and weakened paths.
- Follow downstream effects.
- Retain competing relations.
Generation is a mechanism, not a promise
相生 does not prove kindness, compatibility, wealth, health, family support, or a successful event.
Use it as one chart relation and require direct evidence for relationship, medical, financial, employment, or safety decisions.
- Do not translate 生 as guaranteed benefit.
- No real-world verdict from one link.
