Day Stem and Day Branch in Bazi (日干與日支)
Learn the distinct roles of the Day Stem as Day Master and the Day Branch as its immediate seat, hidden-stem container, and spouse-palace context.
Overview
The Day Stem is the Day Master and the reference for every Ten God relation. The Day Branch is the lower half of the Day Pillar, contains hidden stems, provides or withholds roots, and is traditionally used as the spouse-palace position. The two form one chronological pair, but their technical and interpretive functions must remain separate.

Use the Day Stem as the stable relational reference
Identify the Day Stem’s character, polarity, and Five Phase after the Day Pillar is correctly calculated. Every other stem and hidden stem receives its Ten God name relative to this reference.
The Day Master is not the whole person and is not the complete Day Pillar. Its strength must be assessed through season, roots, support, drain, and control.
- Calculate all Ten Gods from the Day Stem.
- Do not turn the Day Master into a personality type.
Open the Day Branch and its hidden stems
List the hidden stems inside the Day Branch and identify their relations to the Day Master. The Branch may root, support, drain, control, or contain a mixed set of qi.
The same-pillar contact is immediate in layout, but season and whole-chart connections determine how much weight it carries.

Combine same-pillar and cross-chart evidence
Map how the Day Stem interacts with other visible stems and how the Day Branch interacts with the other branches. A stem combination and a branch clash can occur on different layers at the same time.
Do not let the spouse-palace label erase technical relations or let one dramatic relation erase supporting evidence elsewhere.

Keep self and relationship claims bounded
The pair cannot prove identity, morality, health, compatibility, marriage, fidelity, fertility, or a partner’s behavior. People sharing a Day Pillar remain different people in different contexts.
